Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 7 photographs of unidentified naval officers, incl. 2 with Brown Water Navy imprints, comprising:
An officer in plain frock coat with headgear showing the undress cap device appropriate for an Assistant Naval Constructor (1864 Regulations). If so he should be wearing proprietary shoulder straps. Memphis, TN: Y. Day. -- CDV of either a Midshipman or Master's Mate (1862 Regulations) in plain frock coat without visible headgear insignia. New York: W.H. Grogan & J. Carruthers. -- An officer wearing two thin cuff stripes but unreadable shoulder straps. Cincinnati, OH: Landy. -- A copy shot of a youthful ship's Clerk (1852 Regulations). Louisville, KY: Brown & Stowe. Evidence of two revenue stamps once on back. -- A view of a ship's Clerk wearing plain frock coat and headgear with empty wreath. Boston, MA: T.R. Burnham. -- A possible Lieutenant Commander wearing two spaced medium cuff stripes with dress epaulettes that cannot be distinguished. New York: Fontayne. -- CDV size tintype, approx. 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 in., enclosed in paper mount, which appears to be contrived with poorly added cuff stripes and blurred cap device.
Together, 7 images, including 6 CDVs, 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts. Condition generally good, most with soft corners, the copy shot showing heavier wear.
