Lot Description
[LATE INDIAN WARS]. Studio portrait of Company E, 9th New York National Guard or Militia. [New York?]: ca 1885-1900. 

13 1/8 x 9 1/2 in. albumen photograph (tears to left edge, toned, not examined out of frame); framed (scuffed). 

A large group of soldiers wearing uniforms and kepis - most bear the infantry crossed muskets hat insignia (two bear a hunting horn insignia) with regimental number "9" and company distinction "E," with the same designations on their lapels and medals. Several men wear the die-struck waist belt plates with script "SNY" of the New York Militia and New York National Guard (illustrated in O'Donnell & Campbell, Plate 868, page 515). The 9th New York National Guard was originally formed in 1799 and served in various capacities in the War of 1812, the Civil War (under the 83rd New York Volunteers), and the Spanish-American War.
