Lot Description
[RHODE ISLAND]. Partly-printed liquor permit. Bristol County, 26 July 1787. [With:] Clipped signatures of Governor Josias LYNDON and Senator William HUNTER.
(Permit, No. 12) partly-printed liquor permit. Bristol County, RI, 26 July 1787. Approx. 7 x 5 in. letterpress partly-printed document (old creases, a few old ink stains). A liquor permit issued to Jessee Baker of Warren, in the County of Bristol to "Sell Wine Rum, and other distilled Spirits...in a Quantity not less than Ten Gallons. The document was originally printed for use in the County of Providence, but all instances have been corrected to "Bristol."
[With:] LYNDON, Josias (1704-1778). Autograph note signed ("Josias Lyndon"), as Clerk of the Assembly of Rhode Island. [Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations], 31 January 1766. Approx. 6 x 1 1/4 in. note (significant loss to upper left, affixed to cardstock). Possibly promissory note for 200 pounds and 10 shillings.
Lyndon served for decades as the Clerk of the Assembly serving for a single term as governor of Rhode Island Colony (1768-1769).
[Also with:] HUNTER, William (1774-1849). Clipped signature ("W. Hunter"). N.p., n.d. 1 3/4 x 7/16 in. (old crease, mounted to paper).
Hunter was a lawyer from a prominent Rhode Island family. He served as a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly (1799-1812), a United States Senator representing Rhode Island (1811-1821), and a representative in the Rhode Island House (1823-1825). He was one of 13 senators who voted against declaring war against the British on 17 June 1812. Additionally, he served as the United States' first Minister to Brazil (1842-1843).
