Documents related to payment of Connecticut soldiers, incl. a manuscript receipt for wages due to soldiers responding to Washington's alarm to New York. 14 August 1776.

STRONG, Simeon (731-1812). Document signed ("Simeon Strong"), as Major of the 15th Regiment of Connecticut Militia. 14 August 1776.  8 x 3 1/2 in. (toning, creasing). Manuscript receipt for payment of £510 by Jesse Root to Simeon Strong, "to pay over to [Strong's] regiment at the rate of 20/ per man in advance towards wages or who are going to New York in the alarm." Docketed on verso.

The "alarm" was called by General George Washington to send troops to New York to defend against the British invastion. Though troops arrayed to oppose the British were primarily from regiments of the Continental Army, a large number of militia from nearby states were also involved in the battle. Strong's 15th CT militia was one of the regiments caught in the panic and retreat from New York in September 1776.
