"Pay abstract for Commissioned Non-commissioned Officers and Private Soldiers in Capt. Peter Woodbury's Company in Cols. Jacob Gerrishes Regt. for the Month of September A.D. 1778." 7 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. (toning, creasing, manual repairs on verso). Manuscript listing of officers and soldiers identifies 1 captain, 2 lieutenants, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals, 1 drummer, and 46 privates. Signed at bottom "Peter Woodbury, Capt." (signature partially affected by loss). [Winter Hill prison camp, Cambridge, Massachusetts], 1778. Docketed on verso.
Jacob Gerrish (1739-1817) of Newbury, Massachusetts, was a veteran of the Battle of Lexington and served as a captain in a Continental regiment in 1776. In September 1778, Colonel Gerrish's regiment was guarding Hessian prisoners after the Battle of Saratoga.
[With:] Partly printed Massachusetts-Bay bounty note. [Boston, Massachusetts]. 10 January 1779. Approx. 6 x 7 3/4 in. (toning, light soil, adhesive residue on verso). Bounty note No. 4696 with cancelled signature of Henry Gardner ("H. Gardner"), Treasurer, and W. Cooper and N. Appleton for the Committee. Docketed on verso indicating payment to Joseph Barrett.
