PICKENS, Governor Francis W. (1805-1869). Autograph letter signed ("F.W. Pickens"), as Governor of South Carolina. On "State of South Carolina, head Quarters" letterhead. [Columbia, SC]. 1 October 1861. 2pp, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. (toning, ink bleed, creasing). Docketed on verso.

Pickens, who signed the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession, writes to Mr. A. Huger regarding the arrival of a vessel with arms, and the acquisition of "two hundred rifles for flanking companies to each regt.... " An important early war letter demonstrating ongoing efforts by Pickens to arm his state's troops. 

[With:] CAMPBELL, Archibald (1799-1866). Autograph letter signed ("A. Campbell"), as City Treasurer. Columbia [SC]. 31 March 1864. 2pp, 5 x 8 in. (creasing, light toning). Campbell writes to the Honorable Charles Macbeth expressing concern over his inability to pay interest on city stock. "I have gathered from intelligent & discreet persons this morning such information, with their views as have led me to the conclusion to draw on the Bank of the State as heretofore on tomorrow."
