Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of documents related to Texas and the Trans-Mississippi Theater, comprising:

"Moses Nussbaum v. Capt. Wm. Patterson." Approx. 7 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. manuscript ordering Captain William Patterson to release Moses Nussbaum from his custody as he is discharged from his regiment and from military service to the state of Texas. Collin County, Texas. 20 October 1863. Signed by District Judge R.S. Waddill.

HDS indicates Nussbaum enlisted on 3/1/1862 as a private and mustered into Co. D, Texas 22nd Cavalry. The document verifies this, indicating Nussbaum served out the period of his enlistment as a member of  Colonel James G. Stevens's regiment, the 22nd Regiment Texas Cavalry (1st Indian-Texas Regiment). It seems Nussbaum was arrested as a deserter and appealed to the court for satisfaction.

[With:] 2pp letter, author only identified as "America," to Mr. Steve Luey [?]. Millvill [sic], Rusk County, Texas. 4 May 1865. The writer discusses news related to the end of the Civil War, including that "General Lee's surrender has been contradicted" and that "President Lincoln was killed at a theatre.... " (Letter with adhesive repair, a near complete separation along one fold, ink bleed). -- "Voucher No. 16." 1p manuscript receipt for furnishing of supplies including bushels of corn and fodder "for the benefit of Capt. James H. Jones' Company." Signed by Thomas Smith, "1st Lt. & Commanding as 'Capt' & acting asst. quarter master." 20 March 1862.

[Also with:] PEACHER, Colonel Quinton. Manuscript note signed ("Col. Quinton Peacher") to a courier (original spelling retained): "you must knot delay with the mail you must go knight o day Raine or shine.... " Beff [?] River. 3 December 1863. Approx. 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. (toning, light soil, folds). Peacher commanded the 6th Infantry Missouri State Guards at Pea Ridge. --  PECK, Major Thomas. Autograph letter signed ("Thos. Peck"). Camden [Arkansas]. 2 November 1863. Peck answers a request for clarification on when another officer obtained a horse.
