Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of Civil War documents and ephemera related to Pennsylvania.
A group of 8 certificates of disability exempting men from military service in the county of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania,. Each certificate is dated 19 September 1862, measures 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., and is signed by J.J. Crawford, Surgeon for Lycoming County. Disabilities identified as reasons for exemption include deformations of the chest, foot, and leg, a neck tumor, and a hernia.
Conditions vary, most with scattered spotting, creasing, small loss at center, light soil).
The Militia Act of 1862 authorized states that did not fill their volunteer enlistment quota to draft men for service.
[With:] 15 January 1865 manuscript circular from the Headquarters of the 91st Pennsylvania Volunteers issuing orders to sentinels on how to greet officers and how to carry their "pieces." Issued shortly before the regiment's engagements at Dabney Mills and Hatchers Run (February 1865). The 91st participated in some of the most significant battles of the war including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor.
