Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 6th New Hampshire Infantry Regimental ballot box.
4 1/4 x 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. maple wood box with a 4 1/2 in. turned handle (original varnish, partial separation on side of box with handle, surface wear including some chipping to edges, wear to interior lining). The box is comprised of two compartments but lacks the small clay balls that were used in a secret vote for regimental officers. The box is regimentally marked in gold paint on top lid, "6th N. H. Inf."
During its time in service, the 6th New Hampshire Infantry was engaged at Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg and assisted General Ulysses S. Grant in the Siege of Vicksburg.
