Lot Description
[RECONSTRUCTION]. Dabney MAURY ALS to BEAUREGARD. 1873. [With:] Confederate veteran ephemera.
MAURY, Dabney H. (1822-1900). Autograph letter signed ("Dabney H. Maury") to Pierre G.T. Beauregard (1818-1893). Lynchburg, VA, 15 August 1873.
3 pages, 4to, on Piedmont and Arlington Life Insurance Company letterhead, minor spotting and creasing, minor rust marks from old paperclip.
Former Confederate General Dabney Maury writes to fellow General P.G.T. Beauregard concerning the Southern Historical Society, an organization founded by Maury in 1869. He begins "two important objects for us to accomplish." First, "to adopt an effective plan for raising an annual income" and "to appoint a proper man as Secretary of the Society." He proposes the idea of a publication: "I believe by the consideration of an established magazine one can service several thousand members, annual subscribers, to our Society, yielding us from $3,000 to $6,000 per annum." He remarks: "None shall be admitted into our Society who were not actually embarked in our Cause to the full extent of their ability. this would admit many women even, and others who could not take up arms for us, and could exclude many men who are eager enough now to enter our Society."
