Housed in a half pressed paper case (surface wear). The soldier poses with a Colt Army revolver held close to his chest.  His other hand grips a large (likely Bowie) knife thrust downward, unfortunately obscured by movement at the moment of exposure. His plain fatigue jacket bears cloth epaulettes suggesting early war (Midwestern) state issue. -- Seated portrait of a young northern recruit. The soldier displays a civilian M1855 Colt Root sidehammer pocket revolver in profile. Tucked into his issue belt having oval "US" plate is a stiletto type side knife.  He has modified his regulation four button sack coat for the occasion by tucking it into the trousers with the collar of the jacket unbuttoned and folded over.
