Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A pair of ninth plate tintype portraits of doubly armed federal soldiers.
Seated portrait of a determined young Union soldier. (Image rather dark, with deterioration/solarization radiating out from center affecting subject; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (surface wear). The soldier poses with a Colt Army revolver held close to his chest. His other hand grips a large (likely Bowie) knife thrust downward, unfortunately obscured by movement at the moment of exposure. His plain fatigue jacket bears cloth epaulettes suggesting early war (Midwestern) state issue. -- Seated portrait of a young northern recruit. (Image a bit dark, with some abrasions/spots of loss to image; unsealed.) Housed in a full Union case with scroll design (light nicking to edges). The soldier displays a civilian M1855 Colt Root sidehammer pocket revolver in profile. Tucked into his issue belt having oval "US" plate is a stiletto type side knife. He has modified his regulation four button sack coat for the occasion by tucking it into the trousers with the collar of the jacket unbuttoned and folded over. The form of a hazy kepi sits on the side table. -- Together, 2 ninth plate tintypes of Union soldiers.
