[CIVIL WAR]. A General Order and Circular, issued at "Camp near Sharpsburgh" after Antietam, 1862.
Copy of General Orders No. 158, regarding stragglers and pillagers after the Battle of Antietam. Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac, issued by command of Major General McClellan, "Camp near Sharpsburgh Oct 1st 1862." Signed by Assistant Adjutant General John Williams. In part: "We are now occupying a country inhabited by a loyal population, who look to us for the preservation of order an discipline, instead of suffering our men to go about in small parties, lawlessly depredating upon their property. Armed patrols will be sent out daily from all the different Corps in this Army, to arrest all officers and soldiers who are absent from the limits of their camps, without written permission from Corps, Division or Brigade Commanders." -- Copy of a Circular related to paroled Confederate prisoners.
