Lot Description

[MANUSCRIPTS]. Diary of 2 trips across upstate New York into Canada, 1830s-40s, with illustrations.

3 1/4 x 4 3/4 in. pocket journal, containing 54 pages of writing and illustrations (front cover and section of journal fully separated from binding).

Journal begins on 30 July 1835 and goes on as one long, continuous narrative with only certain dates mentioned throughout. Interesting encounters include a visit to an iron foundry "where we were shown a locomotive engine on a new plan invented by Mr. William Avery  where I saw the men engaged in casting a wheel weighing 660 pounds..."

On Bath Island, the writer tells of a harrowing event involving someone's pet pointer: "...While we were on Bath Island, a valuable pointer who was thrown from the bridge, went ashore at Cedar Island. His owner offered 20 dollars to any one who would rescue the dog, we saw Robinson the person who undertook to run this risk, and to our great satisfaction we saw him come safely ashore with his companion."

Other sites mentioned include Genesee Falls, the Cayuga Bridge, Catlin's Cave, an Indian village at Fort Regis, several churches, multiple lighthouses, Plattsburgh battlefield, and many others. The writer sketches man dressed in traditional Native American clothing and accessories captioned, "man who was shown to be raised by Indians at Ticonderoga who had but a single leg of wood."

The second travel account begins 8 September 1841, and describes numerous towns and villages including Phillipsburg, Poughkeepsie, New Paltz, Coxsackie, St. Johnsville, and others.
