Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 5 sixth plate cased images of soldiers incl. one possibly European, plus.
Sixth plate possible copy tintype portrait of a seated Union soldier wearing a 2-piece tongue-in-wreath belt and holding an upturned musket to one side. (Focus and clarity a bit soft, and possible original mat edge visible to left of subject, with some small spots of loss around edge; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case with patriotic design (soiling, nicking to edges). Plate verso with affixed 2-cent revenue stamp. -- Sixth plate tintype portrait of a seated soldier wearing a frock coat overtop of a civilian waistcoat, and holding what appears to be possibly a sporting long gun. (Image a bit dark, with some surface imperfections and minor loss spots; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case with figural design (velvet pad appears to be a replacement as it does not fill up front cover interior, non-functioning closure, nicking and chipping). -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a standing soldier holding a bayonetted long gun. He wears gloves and a rather dark, fitted uniform, suggesting that he is probably European. (Image with chemical deterioration, darkening, and some loss; unsealed.) Housed in a leatherette case (surface wear). -- And 2 others, including one ambrotype and one tintype. Conditions vary, neither in full case. -- Together, 5 sixth plate images of soldiers.
[With:] Sixteenth plate tintype of an engraved portrait of Major General John A. Dix. New York, NY: Abbot & Co., n.d. (Surface texturing and crackling, image overall very dark; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (loss to velvet pad, surface wear throughout). Verso with loose Abbot & Co. card identifying subject.
