Lot Description

Lot of 3 US Swords Including : M1860 Light Cavalry and M1840

American Civil War

1.) US M1840 - 35" blade. 43" overall with hilt and scabbard. Curved single edged blade with wide off-center fuller and quill fullers to both sides. Ricassos are marked US/WD to right side and N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/1848 to left side. Brass hilt has a three branch knuckle guard and leather grip without wiring. Metal scabbard has double hangers.

2.) 34" blade. 40.5" overall with hilt and scabbard. Slightly curved single edged blade with off-center fullers to both sides. Brass hilt has three branch knuckle guard and leather grip without wiring. Scabbard is bright metal with a single hanger. Blade appears to have been refinished and item is unmarked.

3.) 34" blade. 40.5" overall with hilt and scabbard. Slightly curved single edged blade with off-center fullers to both sides. Ricassos are marked AMES Mfg./CHICOPEE/MASS to left side, and U.S./J.H./1859 to right side. Brass hilt has three branch knuckle guard and leather grip that has been recreated with what appears to be a molded resin. Scabbard is metal with double hangers.

All about 44" x 5"

Condition Report

1.) Fair. Blade has mottled appearance with scattered pitting. Leather throat washer is still present. Hilt has mottled darkened discoloration. Scabbard has heavy pitting overall.

2.) Fair to good. Refinished blade, with oxidation to tip and to edge of blade. Hilt shows discoloration. Grip is missing wire and shows losses to leather. Scabbard has oxidation overall, with some scattered dents and other losses. Scabbard is also missing throat.

3.) Fair. Blade has mottled appearance overall from pitting and losses. Still has leather throat washer. Hilt has darkened discoloration. Grip is without wiring and has been repaired. Scabbard has heavy pitting overall.
