Lot Description
** US Property Marked Pre-64 Winchester Model 70
Vietnam War
.30-06. 24" barrel length. SN: 335350. Blued metal refinish with polished bolt body set in a walnut semi-pistol grip stock with freefloating forend, and the standard checkered steel buttplate. The serial number is etched into the bottom of the bolt, and matches that of the receiver on the right. The left receiver shows a faint hand etched US/PROPERTY mark that has been filled in with reblue. The rifle mounts the correct scope blocks for the Unertl telescopic sights that were mounted to Model 70 rifles utilized by the United States Marine Corps and Army in Vietnam. The rifle mounts a Redfield pattern side mount for an aperture rear sight, and dovetail mount for a front tunnel sight. No sights are fitted, and the rifle comes with a 1905 pattern sling. The standard Winchester make and model markings are applied, including the WP monogram proof marking, and matting to the top of the receiver. Model 70 rifles were originally purchased for US rifle teams in the 1950s, but were pressed into service during the Vietnam War due to the lack of suitable sniper rifles in the early years of the conflict. Model 70 rifles served as a stopgap solution to the needs of American snipers until they were gradually replaced by the Remington M40 pattern rifles starting in 1966.
