Lot Description
Late 18th Century Spanish Bilbao/Caribe Hilt Broadsword of the Soldados de Cuera (Leather Jacket Soldiers)
33" blade. 40.5" overall. Double edged spear tip sword with ridges to both sides. Hilt has a cup clamshell guard, single knuckle bow, and quillons that are swept up and down. Grip is wood, with a ball pommel. Blade has obscured marking on right side ricasso. These swords were carried throughout the American Southwest by Spanish "Soldados de cuera" or leather jacket soldiers who manned presidios (military fortifications) as well as mission establishments.
