Lot of Two Document Tubes with one marked Commission of Charles C. Doolittle
American Civil War
1.) 16" long. 2.1" diameter. Japanned tin document tube marked with gold letters reading Comission of/Charles C. Doolittle,/Brigadier General/U.S. Volunteers. Charles Camp Doolittle enlisted on June 20, 1861 in Adrian, Michigan, as a First Lieutentant in the 4th Michigan Infantry. Prior to the war, Doolittle made his living as a store clerk, but quickly adapted to military life. In two months, he was promoted to Captain and assumed command of Company H in time for the Peninsula Campaign. Doolittle later received a promotion to Colonel, and assumed command of the 18th Michigan Infantry on August 13, 1862. His regiment then served in the Western Theater until the end of the war. On April 22, 1865, President Andrew Johnson confirmed Doolittle's promotion to the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers, a rank for which Abraham Lincoln had nominated him. After the war, resettled in Toledo, Ohio, and worked as a cashier at Merchant's National Bank.
