Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. PATTERSON, Robert (1792-1881). A Narrative of the Campaign in the Valley of the Shenandoah in 1861. Philadelphia: Sherman & Co., 1865.

8vo. Frontispiece map. (Minor toning.) Original publisher's brown cloth (spine sunned, a few chips to spine).

FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR AND GENERAL PATTERSON TO FELLOW GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK TO HALF-TITLE, "For / Major General W S Hancock / U S Army / with the Respectful / Compliments of / R Patterson."

Patterson, a veteran with service in both the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, was appointed major general of Pennsylvania volunteers and command of the Department of Pennsylvania and the Army of Shenandoah. Patterson was criticized for his failure to contain the Confederate army after the Battle of Hoke's Run leading to the Union's defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run and he was mustered out in late 1861. This narrative is the general's account of his Civil War service published at the close of the war.
