Lot Description
[MILITARIA]. A group of 5 items highlighted by 1817 Infantry Exercise of the United States identified to Ensign Edmond Hopkins.

Letter 2pp, Horicon, WI, Ma. 23, 1864. To James Judson Hall, 28th Regt. Wis. Vols., Co. C, Cairo, IL. Hall, a resident of Oconomowoc, WI, mustered into the 28th Wisconsin Volunteers in August 1862 and mustered out in Brownsville, TX in late August 1865. From E.(“Ell”) L. Kellogg. With cover that has a lovely dove holding a “balloon” with “Forward to Regt.” In it.

Most of the letter is personal. The first page addresses pictures that each had taken (she concludes he is getting better looking and “soldiering” must agree with him, but she is getting uglier). The second page covers a benefit event, school, and Ell trying to purchase a copy of the music “Bonny Blue Flag,” even at risk of being labeled a “secessionist.” (She says she likes the song.)

There are two other covers, one addressed to Miss Huldah Brown, New Jersey. The other postmarked “Aug.,” “PAID” and “Charleston” in blue ink over preprinted stamp. Addressed o Planters Bank, Athens, Tenn.
