Lot Description
John C. Milligan army camp mess kit. Patented 20 January 1863.
Tin mess camp chest patented by John G. Milligan on 20 January 1863, comprised of 41 pieces contained in an oval tin canister 12 in. high and 10 x 12 in. across the top (wear consistent with age and use). The kit includes a grill, skillet, three condiment bottles, four plates, four cups, four spoons, four tablespoons, four forks, four knives, two paring knives, coffee pot, and three storage containers. The only component missing is a short handleless coffee boiler (item J in the patent illustration).
Milligan hoped to consolidate camp utensils into a useful container that would prevent loss during quick movements by the army. An incredibly scare example of mess gear developed during the war for army units.
