Lot Description
SHELL, J.H., photographer. CDV portrait of Private Horace C. Green, 2nd New York Cavalry, "Harris Light Cavalry," with superimposed ID shield. Findlay, OH: [ca 1860s].
2 1/8 x 3 5/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning and spotting throughout image, with soiling and wear to mount edges and corners). Shell's imprint on verso along with 2-cent revenue stamp. This vignetted bust portrait of Private Green features a superimposed image of Green's identification badge to the lower left, accomplished by placing the badge atop a finished CDV of Green and shooting the composition on a copy stand. The badge's inscription reads, "Horace C. Green / Co. F / H.L. Cav. / Middletown / Vt."
Enlisting as a private in August of 1861, Green was wounded and captured at Stoney Creek, Virginia on June 29, 1864. He suffered a gunshot wound to the face that left him totally blind. Imprisoned at Aiken’s Landing Until August, 1864, He received a medical discharge at Annapolis, Maryland in October of 1864.
