Lot Description
BONTA & CURTISS, photographers. CDV of the Civil War homecoming arch made to welcome Syracuse regiments back from war. Syracuse, NY.
2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (few spots of discoloration to image and mount, soiling and wear to mount edges and corners; few pencil markings on verso). Studio imprint on verso.
Designed and constructed in downtown Syracuse to celebrate the city's returning and hard-fought hometown regiments - the 122nd, the 149th, and the 185th New York Infantries - the homecoming arch featured colorful placards emblazoned with regimental numbers, names of battles including Gettysburg, Mine Run, and Marie's Heights, an Army Corps badge, and the name of a commanding general. All are visible in this street view.
