Civil War hardtack with manufacturer’s stamp, "Holmes & Coutts Army Bread," New York.

3 x 3 in. cracker displaying the deeply stamped imprint, "Holmes & Coutts Army Bread Ne_ Yo__” (surface wear and soiling to hardtack, occasional surface loss to front of cracker, partial paper note with faded pencil inscription affixed to reverse side of hardtack). 

John Holmes and Edward T. Coutts, a flour miller and a barrel maker in New York, partnered together during the Civil War to make and sell hardtack to the military.
