Civil War CDV of an executed deserter.
2 1/8 x 3 3/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (image toned, with surface soil, discoloration, and wear to edges and corners of mount). "The Deserter's fate" inscribed in red ink on mount recto. Provenance: sold Cowan's Auctions, 2010, American History, Including the Civil War, Lot 15.
Featured front and center is an executed Union deserter with his mouth and jaw visibly shattered by musket fire and his body propped up against a coffin. The firing squad stands at attention in the background.
