Lot Description
Civil War CDV of a military court with prisoner.

2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (image toned, with miniscule loss to upper left corner, and light surface soil throughout). "Swearing the Court" inscribed in ink on mount recto. Verso bears penciled identifications (ranks, names, and regiments) of all men in the image apart from the "Two orderlies in back ground" and "Prisoner in the front."

Identified officers of military court are posed with their right hands raised as they are sworn in around the makeshift field court bench while the prisoner waits seated on what appears to be a tree stump.

Subjects include Major Ernest Schache, 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, KIA at Piedmont, VA; Captain W. W. Miles, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, KIA at Millwood, VA; Lieutenant James Jackson, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, WIA at White Sulphur Springs, VA; and officers of the 2nd, 3rd & 8th Virginia (West Virginia) Infantry Regiments.
