[SPANISH AMERICAN WAR] Miscellaneous souvenirs and photographs from one of the shortest declared wars in America.

Photograph album, obl. 10 x 12”, front has “puffy” cello cover with USS Maine and Rear Admiral Charles Sigsbee (her captain when she exploded in Havana Harbor).

Cabinet cards in album: Smith, St. Louis, Mo.; Aune, Trondhjem, Norway and Portland, OR; Gorden, Gary, Minn.; Fischer, St. Louis, MO; Hayes, Portland, OR; Browning, Portland, OR.

Print: LEIGH, W.R. “Sunday Morning in Camp of U.S. Regulars (Colored) at Chickamauga Park.” 10th Cavalry. 8 x 12” on 10-1/2 x 13-1/2” sheet. Wonderful image of men relaxing - giving each other haircuts, others seated on boxes, some standing around, a few try to nap with hats over their faces. Forested background. (overall very good on good quality paper)

6 x 8” photograph of 11 men in uniform. Belt buckles say “MASS,” but no other indicators of unit are visible. Span-Am era. On larger mount.

Admiral Dewey belt buckle. Max. Length, 3”.

Hand-drawn image of U.S.S. Massachusetts on 23-1/2 x 32” cloth (not including fringe). “Drawn by J.M. Burnette.” BB-2 was part of the Flying Squadron in the Spanish American War performing mostly blockade duty, but she was a small battleship, designed for coastal defense, not open ocean cruising, not to mention heavy fighting.

Ribbon, 1-3/8 x 5-3/4”, silk with flag and Dewey’s portrait. “Did I Remember the Maine!”

Strip of fabric printed with the USS Maine and flags and banners. Cotton, 23-12 x 37-1/2” (some staining and browning). A second piece of this same cloth 14” long, with a sleeve on one edge and stretchy cord through it.

Square of cotton fabric for bandana or pillow cover, with views of Havana, Cuba – National Theatre (center), View from Malecon (u.r.), Pres. Coolidge and Pres. Machado (l.r.), President’s Palace (l.l.) and “WE Lindy and his plane” (u.l.). Printed in blue with darker blue background. 17” sq. (edges not hemmed)

Silk handkerchief, approx. 18 x 19”. Crossed flags of U.S. and Cuba in one corner.

Silk handkerchief, approx. 20” sq. With head and shoulders portrait of Dewey incenter, ribbon across top with “Our George He’s all right.” Below portrait: “Rear Admiral George Dewey, U.S.N. / The Hero of the Manila Fight.” Edges are red and white stripped with blue corners with stars. (like new)

Bamboo and paper fan with portrait of Admiral Dewey on a shield surrounded by stand of flags, including a Cuban flag. 18” across when opened. (paper has slightly browned, especially along folds; many separations – most partial)

Magic Lantern slide of Dewey in oval frame, American flag draped along one side with eagle on top, Columbia standing on the other side, plaque at bottom “A Naval Hero.” Alfred L. Harstn & Co., New York. With grosgrain ribbon cap tally, 1-1/4” wide, 20” long, embroidered with “May 1 / DEWEY / 1898” and flags on either side. 

Ad for “The Quintet of Invincibles,” “The men that are and will continue to be looked upon as the Heroes of 1898.” Published by the Chicago Picture Frame Works, Chicago, IL. Image shows four admirals and a president (McKinley, 1843-1901). 

Advertising for the Moline Wagon Company, with a new model wagon upper left, the company logo lower right, and portrait of “Rear Admiral George Dewey U.S.N. / Commander-in-Chief / of the / Asiatic Squadron.” Along the left side and extending along half of the bottom are patriotic symbols – flags, eagle, shield, cannons, swords, rifles with bayonets, etc.
