Miniature watercolor portrait, approx. 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in., housed in 5 x 4 in. oval frame with a contemporary ink identification of the subject being Colonel John Robert with a notation, ".E.J. Smith" below, possibly representing the name of the artist (edge wear to portrait, not examined outside frame).
Colonel John Robert (1757-1812) is noted in family records to have served at Monmouth and was taken prisoner. He owned property at Haverstraw, NY, and his family was from Flushing, NY, originally.
