Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. CDV of US Army officer and amputee Thomas W. Sweeny, WIA Mexican War and Civil War.

CDV on cardstock mount of Thomas William Sweeny standing in a studio setting with sword in hand. A partially folded coat sleeve covers his amputated right arm. New York: Davis Garber, n.d. Manuscript identification on verso, "Genl. T.W. Sweeny, USA" (toning, light soiling).

Thomas William Sweeny (1820-1892), also known as "Fighting Tom," was an Irish-born soldier who fought with the 2nd New York Volunteers in the Mexican War, where his right arm was amputated after being wounded at the Battle of Churubusco. He remained in the military throughout the 1850s and at the outbreak of the Civil War was put in charge of the arsenal at St. Louis. He also helped organize the Indian Home Guard. Sweeny led troops at Fort Donelson, was wounded at Shiloh, fought at Corinth and led a division in the Atlanta Campaign. After the war, he remained in the army and retired a Brigadier General of Regulars in May, 1870.
