[CIVIL WAR]. Collection of illustrated war-date newspapers, maps, prints, and correspondence.
A collection comprised of the following:
More than 50 newspapers printed during the Civil War, containing day-by-day coverage of the war, including news about the generals, battle reports, soldiers' conditions in the field, issues regarding abolition and enslavement, political matters, etc. Several issues feature large illustrations of notable military and political figures as well as battle maps. The following newspaper publications are represented: New York Herald. -- New York Times. -- New York Tribune. -- Philadelphia Inquirer. Condition of newspapers good to poor, with toning, occasional soiling, chipping and loss, some areas of partial and full separation.
[With:] Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Incomplete bound volume (approx. 18 1/2 x 15 in.) containing numerous plates and maps documenting the Civil War (some loose, some still intact, edge and corner wear, toning; binding in poor condition). Several plates were previously trimmed by consignor for use in displays.
[With:] WINDER, John H. (1800-1865), Confederate Brigadier General, overseer/prisons for Federal captives, Chief Provost for Richmond. Autograph endorsement signed ("Jno H Winder"), 26 March 1862. -- Manuscript request issued by Captain C. Strong for relief of his men from orderly duty to prepare for marching. Headquarters 12th Cavalry Regiment Illinois Volunteers, Greenville, LA. 11 June 1864.
[Also with:] 6 prints depicting soldiers and battle scenes, highlighted by 2 lithographs of Antietam by Prang & Co., Boston, MA, 1887, 17 x 24 in. (light toning, some edge wear). -- The Lincoln Family. Currier & Ives, New York, 1867, 13 x 16 in. (including margins) (tearing, chipping to edges). -- Battle maps for Manassas and Shiloh. Single sheet, 10 x 13 in. overall, comprised of two separate maps, all text in French, published by the Crescent Lithographing Co., New Orleans, LA, ca 1865-1867) (toning, some soiling). -- Sheet music, Removal March for State Capitol, Baton-Rouge. Composed by J.A. Fourrier, copyrighted 1878 (edge and corner wear).
Together, more than 50 newspapers accompanied by numerous plates, maps, prints, and correspondence dating from the Civil War-era.
