Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 5 photographs of soldiers, highlighted by quarter plate tintype of Union infantryman.
Quarter plate tintype full-length portrait of a Union infantryman. N.p., ca 1860s. (Light scratches, some darkening at corners.) Uncased, with brass preserver. The infantry private wears a military vest and civilian overcoat with a narrow-brim hat pinned on the sides. His hat bears a regimental numeral and company letter (appears to be "H"). -- Approx. 1 7/8 x 3 in. tintype three-quarters portrait of Union soldier. New York: Fordham & Saunier, ca 1860s. (Clipped and mounted in CDV-sized cardstock mount). Photographer's imprint on mount recto. Ink inscription identifies subject as A. Longworthy. -- 2 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. tintype full-lenth portrait of militaman wearing crossed shoulder belts, dress epaulettes, a pommed shako with insignia and holding a bayonetted rifle. (Some bends to plate, edges darkened.) Uncased. -- 2 1/2 x 3 5/8 in. tintype full-length portrait of a soldier in uniform with "US" belt plate, kepi, holstered knife, and holding his rifle. (A few fleabites.) -- Full-length portrait of a young soldier wearing white gloves and grasping a bayonetted rifle. Cleveland, OH: Ryder's, n.d. 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. albumen CDV on cardstock mount. (Minor toning.) -- Together, 5 images.
