Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 3 items highlighted by military memorial certificate presented to Lieutenant William A. Williams, Co. H, 123rd Ohio Infantry, POW Libby Prison.

"Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable" (Webster) Des Moines, IA: W.H. Sallada, 1881-1883. Very scarce. As noted Williams was taken prisoner June 15th, 1863 at Battle of Winchester (VA) and was part of the famous escape from Libby Prison.  He is mentioned in several texts on the escape.  Measures 30 x 24”. (areas of darkening; affixed to later backing)

[With:] Civil War Era Scrapbook of Original Newspaper Clippings, Mostly Related to Generals. The collector saved many portraits and biographies of Generals whose names are not household. He has some of the better-known generals - Grant, Fremont, Hancock, but also names that don't appear often - Peck, Lander, Harney, Keyes, Foster, Benham, Negley, and more. M.G. Samuel Curtis was connected to the Battle of Pea Ridge. Even this battle does not register with many students. An interesting assortment, many natives of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky.

Declaration of Independence. New York: Colonial Press, ca 1902. 16 x 20". Style similar to the Binns version with the text in an oval surrounded by vignettes of each state. This one has Independence Hall at the top and the painting of the signing of the Declaration (John Trumbull) at the bottom. (surface soil; edge scuffing)
