Lot Description
[MILITARIA - MEDICAL]. Medical tools and aids, incl. pair of Civil War-period crutches and brace.

The lot features the following tools: Tooth forceps manufactured by Tiemann, NY, ca 1860s-1880s. -- Amputating knife manufactured by George Tiemann, NY, ca 1850s. -- Hard rubber medical syringe with flat ended plunger, 3/4 in. hard rubber with numerous exit holes at the bulbous tip, used to treat venereal diseases and wound irrigation, ca 1860s. -- Borwick "Cast Steel" curved blade brass housed fleam, Ex. Dr. Paul Johnson Collection (as per typed label affixed to object). -- 2 pair of tweezers, one with modern label identifying the tweezers as "Rev War." -- Whale bone seam seater. -- Medical suppository mold, ca late 18th-early 19th century. -- 5 boxes containing remedies issued by Parke, Davis & Co., Detroit, MI (some with punctures in packaging causing contents to partly come out). -- Kit containing 8 tools, most marked either "Daran" or "Luer." -- 2 pair of spectacles, with one pair housed in case identified to "Drs. Rudd & Buchanan, Richmond, VA." -- Compass, ca mid 19th century (cover glass cracked). -- Wood protractor. -- Case containing heavily worn scale. -- Condition of instruments consistent with age and use.

[With:] Primitive hand-carved wooden brace marked, "A. GOODWIN ASHFIELD MS." The brace includes a slotted area in the base to adjust height. The foot could also be set at a specific angle using carved threaded wooden pegs. A number of canvas straps are present, which would have been used to hold a leg in place. Approx. 25 in. long, 8 1/2 in. tall, 4 in. wide. 19th century (significant wear to brace and canvas straps, consistent with age and use).

[With:] A pair (2) of hand-carved single stem crutches, 50 in. ln., possibly comprised of oak. The arm rest is hand carved and doweled in the end of the single wooden support (surface wear and scratching throughout, consistent with use). Provenance: Purchased from Dr. Paul Johnson, a noted Civil War medical collector (as per accompanying tags presumably written in the hand of Carroll J. Delery III). 

[Also with:] 3 wooden crutches, each approx. 52 in. ln. (surface wear and scratching throughout, consistent with use). The crutches lack any period or modern identification indicating age or use.
