Lot Description
U.S. Model 1860 Naval Cutlass and Scabbard by Ames
American Civil War
26" slightly curved, single-edged blade with 18" unstopped median fuller. Blade 1.25" wide at ricasso. Overall length 32" with a 6" hilt with a brass half-cup guard. Grooved wooden grip covered in leather with 20 wraps of twisted wire. Bright blade with weak Ames "scroll" address on reverse at ricasso and marked U.S.N./DR/1862 on the obverse, showing the year of manufacture and inspection by USN inspector Daniel Reynolds. Pommel cap with D.R. inspection as well. Inside face of upper cup guard with numerous small markings including the small numbers 467 and 468, large numbers 33 and a third three-digit number that is not fully legible. The cutlass includes an original leather scabbard with brass frog button on the face and 44 copper rivets that close the rear seam. A very nice condition example of a Civil War period US Naval Cutlass.
