Percussion Coat Pistol by J Hapgood of Massachusetts
.34 caliber. 6.625" two-stage octagon to round wedge retained barrel with hooked breech. SN: NSN. Blued finish, German silver mountings, figured walnut stock. Single shot smoothbore percussion pistol with a fixed notch rear sight and a German silver blade front sight. Lightly engraved commercial percussion lock with replaced hammer is marked J HAPGOOD. No other markings are present. The tang of the hooked breech is lightly engraved and the German silver furniture includes the buttcap, triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, ramrod thimble and entry pipe and a lozenge shaped thumb piece. A replacement horn tipped wooden ramrod is included that is the wrong size for the bore and shows no particular age. Sellers lists Joab Hapgood (1800-1890) as being a gunmaker and gunsmith in Shrewsbury, MA who worked circa late 1820s until the 1870s. He also operated a sporting goods shop in Boston during the 1860s and 1870s.
