Manuscript "Special Orders" No. 43, "Mouth Antietam," MD, 24 September 1862. One page, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in., on "Head Quarters, Department of North Carolina," letterhead, with manuscript edit to replace "Department of North Carolina" with "9th Army Corps." Signed "Lewis Richmond" as Assistant Adjutant General on General Burnside's staff. Orders grant leave of absence for Lieutenant Jacob Eaton, Company B, 8th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, due to wounds received at the Battle of Antietam.

Lewis Richmond (1824-1894) enlisted as a captain on 13 September 1861 and was commissioned into the US Volunteers Adjutant General Department, serving as assistant adjutant general on the staff of Major General Ambrose E. Burnside and being promoted ultimately to brigadier general by brevet in March of 1861 for services in the campaign from the Rapidan to Petersburg. After the war he notably served as the US Minister to Portugal from 1884-1885.
