[CIVIL WAR]. A group of items related to Brevet Brigadier General Lewis RICHMOND (1824-1894).
CDV vignetted bust portrait of Richmond as a colonel, featuring his characteristic mustache and sideburns. Bristol, RI: William C. Liscomb (significant toning, soiling, wear to edges and corners). Verso with Liscomb's imprint and various modern pencil inscriptions.
Stereoview portrait of Maj.-Gen. A. E. Burnside and members of his Staff at his Headquarters, near Richmond, Va. Hartford, CT: John C. Taylor (toning, wear to edges and corners). Mount recto with series imprint; verso with affixed printed paper label featuring image number, caption, and "original view" credit to Brady. Image features Ambrose Burnside seated, flanked by two standing officers including Lewis Richmond.
Manuscript "Special Orders" No. 43, "Mouth Antietam," MD, 24 September 1862. One page, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in., on "Head Quarters, Department of North Carolina," letterhead, with manuscript edit to replace "Department of North Carolina" with "9th Army Corps." Signed "Lewis Richmond" as Assistant Adjutant General on General Burnside's staff. Orders grant leave of absence for Lieutenant Jacob Eaton, Company B, 8th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, due to wounds received at the Battle of Antietam.
Lewis Richmond (1824-1894) enlisted as a captain on 13 September 1861 and was commissioned into the US Volunteers Adjutant General Department, serving as assistant adjutant general on the staff of Major General Ambrose E. Burnside and being promoted ultimately to brigadier general by brevet in March of 1861 for services in the campaign from the Rapidan to Petersburg. After the war he notably served as the US Minister to Portugal from 1884-1885.
